Fat Pockets
Your eyes are framed by their lids and brows. Over time, the eyelids and even the eyebrows can become 'droopy' or 'baggy' as the skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat pockets bulge. This commonly occurs with age, but may also have an hereditary element.
Besides making you appear tired or older, drooping eyelids can obscure your vision and create difficulty in wearing glasses.
A droopy upper eyelid is called "ptosis." It may affect one eye or both eyes. Ptosis may be congenital (present at or shortly after birth) or it may develop later in life. When mild, ptosis may only be a cosmetic concern. When more severe, however, it may cover the pupil and result in significant interference with vision.
With malpositions of the lower eyelid, the lid margin may be turned inward toward the eye, or outward away from the eye. In both cases, there may be significant symptoms involving vision, appearance, or comfort. Symptoms typically include ocular discomfort, tearing, mucous discharge, and reduced vision. In some cases, corneal infection and scarring may be seen.
Entropion refers to a condition where the eyelid and eyelashes are turned inwards. As a result, the eyelid skin and lashes rub against the cornea of the eye causing irritation and pain. It is most often seen in older patients as a result of relaxation of the eyelid tissues. It may sometimes be seen as a congenital condition in young children.
What causes fatty deposits in the eye?
The MOST COMMON reason for fatty deposits in the eye are age and heredity. Everyone in some way has some natural collection and pooling of fluids around the under eye area, The composition of our eye area makes it naturally prone to accumulation of fluids and fatty tissue deposits which collect under and around
the eyes. This often is the cause of dark circles under the eye.
Any disturbance in the lipid metabolism can cause such a case, most commonly manifesting as arcus senilis where the cornea is deposited with fatty material e.g. phospholipids and cholesterol, resulting in corneal opacity. Disturbances in the lipid metabolism can occur in cases such as: hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipoproteinemia and hyperlipidemia
